Al Diwaniyah
Skip unless you are a birdwatcher or a rail enthusiast: one night is enough to see the castle and wetlands, but most travellers should go to Najaf or Karbala instead.
Al Diwaniyah is a mid-sized city on the Baghdad–Basra rail line, known for its Ottoman-era Zarb Castle and birdwatching in the surrounding wetlands and agricultural areas. The city has few hotels and limited tourist infrastructure; most visitors pass through on the overnight train. One day covers the main sights; two days if you want to explore the wetlands.
