Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Italy and Malta ↗The region's headline sights run on timed tickets that sell out: book the Vatican Museums, the Colosseum, the Uffizi, the Last Supper and Malta's Hypogeum before you fix train and hotel dates.
  • Italy and Malta ↗Budget for per-night city taxes in Italy (up to about €10 a person in Rome), Malta's per-night environmental contribution, and Venice's day-visitor fee on peak days; none are included in most online room prices.
  • Italy ↗Italy is in the Schengen area. Check the entry rules for your passport on official sources; the EU's Entry/Exit System registers non-EU visitors at the first Schengen border, and further pre-travel authorisation rules are being introduced.
  • Italy ↗Historic centres are ZTL limited-traffic zones: cameras fine any unauthorised car that enters, often months later through the hire company. Park outside and walk in.
  • Italy ↗Regional train tickets bought on paper must be validated in the machine on the platform before boarding; digital tickets carry a time and need no stamping.
  • Italy ↗Venice charges day-visitors an access fee on selected peak days; check the city's official site if you are not sleeping there.

Reggio Calabria sits on the toe of Italy, a ferry port facing Messina across the Strait. Its one unmissable sight is the Museo Nazionale della Magna Grecia, home to the two Riace Bronzes, 5th-century BCE warrior statues pulled from the sea in 1972. The rest is a long seafront promenade, a rebuilt cathedral and a castle shell. Most travellers pass through in a day, or use it as the gateway to Sicily and to Scilla and Aspromonte to the north.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The centre is walkable: Corso Garibaldi links the main squares and the promenade runs parallel. ATAM city buses mostly converge on Piazza Garibaldi in front of Stazione Centrale; buy tickets at a newsagent or tabaccheria. Regional trains stop at local stations (Santa Caterina, Lido) that are closer to the ferry terminal than Centrale. A car helps for Aspromonte and inland villages.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Scilla

go

Door to door: About 30–40 min each way

Regional train north along the coast from Reggio Calabria Centrale

Fishing port under Ruffo Castle with beaches on both sides; easy half-day by train.

Messina, Sicily

go

Door to door: About 40 min crossing plus port time

Ferry or hydrofoil across the Strait from Reggio's port

Worth it for the crossing view alone; Messina itself is mostly a transit port, so continue onward if you have time.

Aspromonte National Park

caution

Door to door: About 1.5 h to Gambarie

Car via SP 7 towards Gambarie

Granite massif to almost 2,000 m; you need a car and a clear day.

Pentedattilo

caution

Door to door: About 1 h by car

Car, about 45 min; nearest public transport to Melito Porto Salvo or Anna, then 8–10 km

Partly restored hill village under a five-fingered rock; hard without a car.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Centro / Corso Garibaldi

Walkable to the museum, cathedral, castle and promenade; best for a short stay without a car.

Lungomare Falcomatà

Seafront hotels and B&Bs; views across the Strait to Sicily, a short walk from the centre.

Near Stazione Centrale

Practical for early trains and buses; Piazza Garibaldi outside is the bus hub.

Watch out

Safety

Reggio Calabria is a normal southern Italian city: petty theft and night-time nuisance are the realistic risks, not violence against visitors. Organised crime exists but does not target tourists; use standard precautions and avoid unlit side streets late at night.
  • Organised crime ('Ndrangheta) has a long presence in the area; it rarely touches tourists, but stick to normal city precautions at night.
  • Summer heat and humidity on the seafront; carry water.
  • Ferry terminals: Reggio and Villa San Giovanni are 14 km apart, and Messina has two landing points; check which one your return ferry uses.
  • Some sights (Villa Genoese Zerbi, parts of the castle) open only for exhibitions or events: check before you go.
