Troy is a corporate and shopping suburb about 20 miles (32 km) northwest of downtown Detroit, built out between the 1960s and 1990s. Its draws are a luxury mall, a small historical village and a 100-acre nature centre, all spread along multi-lane roads. Almost everyone drives; a car is the difference between a smooth day and a wasted one.

Getting around

Drive. SMART buses run through Troy (fare about $2.00, check) but many destinations sit a mile or more from the nearest stop. Parking is free and plentiful — no meters or pay lots in the city. Traffic bunches on Big Beaver Road and around the malls at rush hour and on shopping weekends.

Safety

Troy is a low-crime, well-lit suburb and generally safe for visitors. The real risks are driving: winter ice, I-75 rush-hour congestion and long, fast multi-lane roads with poor pedestrian crossings.
  • Distances between sights are long and pavements are patchy: plan on driving, not walking.
  • Bus coverage is thin; check SMART routes and times before relying on them.
  • Airport shuttles and taxis are expensive — compare with a rental car before booking.
  • Winter ice and snow make driving and walking risky from December to March.
