Guachochi
Go for 2 nights only if you want Rarámuri country and Sinforosa Canyon; otherwise skip it — buses from Creel take 2½ h and nothing is bookable online.
Guachochi is a small Sierra Tarahumara town of about 15,000 people and one of Mexico's Pueblos Mágicos, sitting at roughly 2,400 m in the Sierra Madre Occidental. It is the practical base for Sinforosa Canyon, a 1,830 m-deep rift 18 km south, and for the Rarámuri (Tarahumara) communities around it. There is no scheduled air service, no online bus booking and one bank, so this is a place you commit to rather than pass through.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- Mexico ↗Check entry rules for your passport with Mexico's National Migration Institute (INM) or your nearest Mexican consulate; keep proof of your entry (stamp or digital record) until you leave.
- Mexico ↗Security advice differs by state: some governments advise against travel to parts of several states. Check your own government's advice for each region on your route.
- Mexico ↗Do not drink tap water; use bottled or filtered water and ice from reliable places.
- Mexico ↗Foreign visitors to Quintana Roo (Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Bacalar, Holbox) pay the state VISITAX online at visitax.gob.mx only; lookalike sites add fees.

Getting around
The town itself is small enough to walk. Sitio taxis in the centre run to the Sinforosa Canyon viewpoint, 18 km south — agree the fare and the wait before you leave. For the canyon floor and the Rarámuri villages, a car or a hired local guide is the practical option (check locally; no public transport is documented to either).

North and west of the centre, near Museo Norawa and Lago las Truchas; motel-style places with parking, quieter at night.
North end, near the airfield
Cabins under pine trees; needs a taxi or car for everything, best if you have your own transport.

Watch out
Safety
- Buses from Chihuahua and Creel are local service: no online booking, no reservations, limited daily departures. Confirm times at the station the day before.
- Highway 20 to Parral and Highway 25 to Creel are paved, but winter snow and summer rain can close sections; drive in daylight.
- Scotiabank is the only bank in town. Bring cash; card acceptance outside hotels is patchy.
- 4G works in town, but expect dead zones in the canyons and villages. Download offline maps before you leave.
- Nights from November to March drop below freezing, with frost and occasional snow. Ask whether your room has heating.
- No tourist facilities are documented inside Sinforosa Canyon: carry your own water and food and do not descend without a guide (check locally).
