Shah Alam is Selangor's state capital, about 20 km west of Kuala Lumpur, and it is a city of sections and roundabouts rather than a walkable old town. Almost everyone comes for one building: the Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Mosque, the Blue Mosque, with its 51.2 m dome and four 142.3 m minarets. The rest of the day fills with the Garden of Islamic Arts next door, a state museum, a lake garden and, if you have children, the agricultural park or the snow park at I-City. Stay one night if the mosque is your goal; two if you want the parks and a mall afternoon without rushing. It is a safe, low-drama stop, best used as a half-day trip from Kuala Lumpur or a base for the western Klang Valley.

Getting around
Shah Alam is built for cars. KTM Komuter serves four stations (Batu Tiga, Shah Alam, Padang Jawa, Bukit Badak) on the Port Klang–Sentul line, but none is close to the Blue Mosque, so plan a Grab or taxi for the last leg. RapidKL buses 750 and 751 link Kuala Lumpur with the city centre, and local shuttles such as T754 and T755 run from the KTM station. Grab is cheap and the default for tourists; a rented car helps if you want the agricultural park, I-City and the lake gardens in one day.

Safety
- Dress modestly at the Blue Mosque: long trousers or skirt, covered shoulders, shoes off. Non-Muslims should avoid prayer times, especially Friday midday.
- The city is spread over 56 sections with 18 roundabouts: addresses mean little without a section number, so save map pins.
- Afternoon thunderstorms are common; carry a light rain jacket and keep outdoor plans for the morning.
- Some malls and parks have limited or no public transport nearby; budget for Grab rather than waiting for a bus.
- There are few cinemas in the city by policy; nightlife is mostly mamak stalls and cafés.
