Mariestad is a small Vänern town of about 24,000 people in Västergötland, founded in 1583 and built around a cathedral that never had a bishop. The centre is walkable in an hour; the reasons to stay longer are the lake, the Göta canal at Sjötorp 20 km north and Djurö national park, which you reach only by boat. Most travellers pass through on the E20 between Gothenburg and Stockholm, or stop on the Kinnekullebanan rail line.

Getting around

Central Mariestad is small enough to walk end to end in about 20 minutes. Västtrafik runs the regional buses and the Kinnekullebanan train; Taxi Mariestad is the local cab firm. Bikes can be rented at Sjötorps upplevelsecenter in Sjötorp, 20 km north.

A quiet, low-crime small town; the real risks are cold water and fast weather on Vänern, dark unlit paths at night, and the lack of an emergency room in town.

  • Djurö national park is an island with no bridge: boat only, and tours run in season.
