Kalk Bay is a working fishing harbour on the False Bay coast of the Cape Peninsula, about 30 km south of Cape Town and reachable by train. The village is one street long: harbour, station, Main Road shops and restaurants, and steep alleys climbing the mountain side. Most travellers see it as a half-day stop between Muizenberg and Simon's Town; it earns a night because the evening restaurants and the early harbour fish sale are the point.

Getting around

The village is walkable end to end in about 15 minutes. Metro trains run along the coast to Muizenberg and Cape Town in one direction and Fish Hoek and Simon's Town in the other; the station is on Main Road. Driving the M4 is easy but parking near the harbour is tight on weekends.

Watch out

Safety

Kalk Bay itself is a busy, well-lit village and fine on foot by day. The real risks are petty theft from parked cars on the peninsula, cold water with no lifeguard, and walking the railway or empty streets after dark.
  • Do not leave bags visible in a parked car; break-ins happen at Cape Peninsula car parks.
  • Metro trains are fine by day but avoid empty late-night carriages; take a taxi after dark.
  • The sea here is cold and the harbour wall has no lifeguard: swim at Fish Hoek or Muizenberg instead.
  • Restaurant tables by the water book out on December and January evenings.
