  • South America ↗Above 2,500 m (Bogotá, Quito, Cusco, La Paz) keep the first day light; sleep lower where you can (Sacred Valley before Cusco) and descend if headache comes with vomiting or confusion.
  • South America ↗A yellow fever certificate is required on arrival in French Guiana, and asked for on some routes into Bolivia, Paraguay, Suriname and Guyana, or when arriving from Amazon areas — vaccinate at least 10 days before travel and carry the card.
  • South America ↗Overnight buses are the norm in Argentina, Chile and Peru, but pick top-tier companies and keep valuables on your body; on-board thefts from overhead racks are the common loss.
  • Chile ↗Check entry rules for your passport with Chile's National Migration Service or a Chilean consulate; keep the entry slip or digital record you receive.
  • Chile ↗Torres del Paine: campsites and refugios on the W and O treks must be booked in advance, and the park requires an entry ticket bought ahead; check the official park (CONAF) channels.
  • Chile ↗Chile strictly controls food imports: declare fruit, meat, dairy, seeds and honey on arrival, or throw them away before customs.

Valdivia is the capital of the Los Ríos region, 850 km south of Santiago where three rivers meet, 15 km from the Pacific at Corral Bay. It is a walkable, low-rise city known for its German settler heritage, its craft beer and the 17th-century fort ruins downriver. Most travellers reach it by bus or a short flight from Santiago and use it as a two-night stop between the Lake District and Chiloé.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The centre is walkable. Colectivos (fixed-route shared taxis) and city buses cover the rest; buses run until about 20:00 on most routes and fares are low (check current fares). Taxis, Uber, InDrive and Didi operate in town. For Niebla and the coast, take the local bus from the centre.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Niebla and Corral forts

go

Door to door: About 1 h to Niebla; 2–3 h with the ferry crossing

Local bus to Niebla, then passenger ferry to Corral

The 17th-century fort ruins at Niebla and Corral are the main reason to head downriver; boat tours from the fish market cover both in about 5 h.

Oncol National Park and Cerro Oncol

go

Door to door: About 1–1.5 h

Bus or car toward the coast, then trailhead

Day hike or overnight; check trail conditions and weather before setting out.

Reserva Costera Valdiviana trail

overnight

Door to door: Half a day just to reach the trailhead

Bus to Niebla, ferry to Corral, then local bus or hitchhike to Chaihuín

40–50 km, mostly flat, 2–3 days; camping along the route.

Puerto Varas and Frutillar

overnight

Door to door: About 2–3 h

Bus south on Ruta 5, about 2–3 h

Lake District towns with volcano views; better as the next stop than a return day trip.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Centro (around Plaza de la República)

Walkable to the river market, General Lagos street and most restaurants; best for a short stay without a car.

Isla Teja

Across the river, home to the Kunstmann brewery and the history museum; quieter, a taxi or colectivo ride from the centre.

Near the bus terminal (Prat / Calle Calle riverside)

Convenient for early departures and river views; a 10–15 min walk to the plaza.

Watch out

Safety

Valdivia is a calm, walkable city and one of the safer stops in southern Chile. The real annoyances are winter rain, uneven pavements after dark and bars with no posted prices: ask before you sit.
  • Winter (Jun–Aug) is wet and cool: pack a rain shell.
  • Boat tours to the forts narrate in Spanish only; food is included, drinks are not.
  • Bus and colectivo fares change: confirm with the driver.
  • Some bars on Calle Esmeralda have no posted prices: ask the total before you order.
