Know before you go
- The building opened in 1919 as the Grand Splendid theatre and cinema, with a painted ceiling dome, frescoes and theatre boxes; it became a bookshop in 2000 while keeping the original structure.
- The stage is now a café: it is the obvious spot for a photo of the whole room, and also a genuine place to sit with a coffee.
- It is a real, working shop, not a museum: shelves are organised for browsing and buying, and staff are there to sell books, not to guide tours.
