Corvallis is a small Willamette Valley college town, home to Oregon State University and the oldest active courthouse in Oregon. It is a low-key stop between Portland, Salem and Eugene, best used as a base for the Coast Range trails and the Oregon Coast, not as a sightseeing destination on its own. Most travellers pass through in a day or use it for one or two nights.

Getting around

Corvallis Transit System (CTS) buses are free and cover the city on weekdays and Saturdays; no Sunday service. Downtown, campus and the riverfront are walkable. A car is needed for the Coast Range, the Oregon Coast and most day trips; Hertz and Enterprise rent on NW 9th St.

Safety

Corvallis is a low-crime college town; the real risks are wet winter roads, deer and cyclists on rural routes, and Sunday with no buses. Standard US city care applies after dark around Monroe Ave bars.
  • No public transport on Sundays: plan Saturday errands or a taxi.
  • Greyhound and FlixBus use curbside stops only, with no station; buy and print tickets online before you travel.
  • Rental fleets are small: reserve a week ahead for anything beyond a compact or mid-size sedan.
  • Winter is wet and grey; summer afternoons can pass 32°C with little shade downtown.
