Beccles and Bungay are two small market towns on the River Waveney, 8 km apart at the southern edge of the Norfolk Broads. They serve local life more than tourism, so the draw is the river, the walks and the boat hire rather than a sight list. Beccles has the larger centre and the rail station; Bungay has the castle and the canoe meadow.

Getting around

Both towns are small enough to cross on foot in 15–20 min, but they are 8 km apart, so you need a car, a bus or a bike between them. Regional Cycle Route 30 links the two and continues to Diss and Lowestoft; the Angles Way long-distance path also runs through both. Beccles has the only rail station, on the Ipswich–Lowestoft line.

Both towns are quiet and low-risk; the real issues are dark riverside paths, flooding after heavy rain, and unlit lanes if you walk between them at night.
  • The two towns are 8 km apart: do not plan to walk between them with luggage.
  • Beccles railway station is a 10–15 min walk from the centre, not in it.
  • Boat and canoe hire is seasonal and weather-dependent: book ahead in summer and expect to be turned away on a wet day.
