Bau-Bau
Spend 1–2 nights in Bau-Bau to see the Buton Palace Fortress and experience a city where Korean script is used for the local language; it's a cultural stop, not a beach or dive destination.
Bau-Bau, on Buton Island in Southeast Sulawesi, is a quiet port city known for the 16th-century Buton Palace Fortress (Wolio Palace) and the use of Korean hangeul characters to write the Cia-Cia language. Most visitors pass through on the way to Wakatobi or the Togean Islands. One full day is enough to see the fortress and wander the old town; two days if you want to explore the surrounding coastline or take a slow pace.

Watch out
Safety
- The fortress is a ruin; there is no roof or museum inside — go for the views and history, not exhibits.
- Korean script on signs is for the local Cia-Cia language, not a tourist attraction; be respectful.
- Ferries to Wakatobi or the mainland can be cancelled in rough weather; check the schedule at the port.
