FairfaxFairfax, California

Base in San Rafael or Mill Valley and give Fairfax one evening: live music, a brew pub and the bicycle museum fill a half-day, not a trip.

Fairfax is a small Marin County town of about 7,400 people, 30–40 minutes by bus or car from San Rafael and roughly an hour from San Francisco. Its downtown is a few walkable blocks of bars, cafés and bike shops, with live music most nights and trailheads for road and mountain biking on the doorstep. Most travellers see it as an evening or a half-day stop from a larger Marin base rather than a place to sleep.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

Downtown is a few flat blocks and you can walk it end to end in about 10 minutes. Marin Transit buses run from San Rafael and San Anselmo; the West Marin Stagecoach serves the coast side. A car or a bike opens the trails and West Marin roads.

Downtown Broadway

The only hotel in town sits here, steps from the bars and the museum; expect small-town quiet after about midnight.

San Anselmo or San Rafael

10–20 min away with far more beds and better bus links; the usual choice for a Marin stay.

Watch out

Safety

Fairfax is a low-crime small town and walking downtown at night is normal. The real risks are winding roads after a drink, steep shared trails, and weekend traffic on Sir Francis Drake Blvd.
  • Sir Francis Drake Blvd backs up on weekend afternoons and at commute times.
  • Bars on Broadway can be loud and crowded late on weekends; keep an eye on your group.
  • Trail riding here is steep and shared with hikers: ride within your skill and yield on blind corners.
  • Summer fog can sit over the hills all day; the coast side is often colder than the town.
