La Plata is Argentina's planned capital of Buenos Aires Province, laid out in 1882 as a perfect square with diagonals, a central axis and a park every six blocks. It is 56 km south-east of Buenos Aires, about an hour by train or bus, and its main sights — the natural science museum, the cathedral, the Le Corbusier house and the cemetery — sit within a walkable grid. Most travellers see it as a day trip; one night is enough if you want the museums without rushing.

Getting around
The numbered grid makes walking easy: cross the centre in about 45 minutes. City buses (micro) are cheap but need a Sube card, bought at newsstands; hail the bus or it will not stop. Taxis are plentiful and cheap; watch the meter on diagonal avenues, which can confuse the route. The Tren Universitario tram loops from the railway station past the university and hospital to Los Hornos.

Safety
- Street signs are often missing; count blocks from the numbered grid instead.
- Some taxi drivers take a long diagonal route: agree the fare or follow the meter.
