Noordoostpolder
One night, or a day trip from Lelystad or Zwolle: Schokland and Nagele in a half day, the rest is flat polder cycling.
Noordoostpolder is reclaimed land: a whole municipality of flat fields, planned villages and one UNESCO site, the former island of Schokland. There is no train station and no old town. Come for Schokland, the modernist village of Nagele and quiet cycling, not for a city break.

Getting around
Bike is the intended way: the polder was designed flat and the villages sit within easy riding distance of each other. Rent an e-bike from a station-based scheme (about €0.75 per 15 minutes, €30 per day) with a drop point at Schokland Museum. Buses connect Emmeloord to Lelystad, Kampen, Zwolle, Heerenveen, Steenwijk and Groningen; check times on 9292.nl. A car is the fastest option for the villages and for Schokland, which has no direct bus from Emmeloord.

Watch out
Safety
- No train station in the polder: everything runs through Emmeloord by bus, so plan the last connection back.
- Schokland has no direct bus from Emmeloord; you change at Urk or Nagele, or walk about 30 minutes from the Sloetweg stop.
- Wind and rain arrive fast off the IJsselmeer; carry a shell even in summer.
- Villages are small and close early; eat in Emmeloord or book ahead.
