Grenoble is a flat, walkable city of about 160,000 people wedged where the Isère and Drac rivers meet, ringed by three mountain ranges. It is a university and research town, not a postcard destination, but the Bastille fort, the old town and the surrounding massifs make it a useful 1–2 night stop between Lyon and the Alps, or a base for hiking and skiing.

Five tram lines and a dense bus network run under the TAG brand; a single ticket is valid for one hour across the network and must be stamped. Trams run until about 01:00, most buses stop earlier. The centre is flat and easy on foot or by bike; the city is one of the flattest in Europe despite the mountains around it.
