Rocky Mountain National Park sits on the Continental Divide in Colorado's Front Range, about 1 h 45 min by car from Denver. The eastern side (Estes Park) is the developed half: Bear Lake Road, Glacier Gorge, Longs Peak at 14,259 ft and most of the day hikes. The western side (Grand Lake) is wetter, forested and quieter. Trail Ridge Road links the two over Fall River Pass at 12,183 ft — the highest continuous paved road in the United States — and closes with snow, often from late October to late May. Summer afternoons bring thunderstorms above the treeline; the practical day is an early start, a hike before noon, and a drive or a visitor centre after.

What are the best hikes in Rocky Mountain National Park?
For a short first hike, Emerald Lake via Bear, Nymph and Dream lakes (3.6 mi round trip). For a bigger day, Sky Pond from Glacier Gorge (about 9 mi, with a short scramble). For a summit, Flattop Mountain and Hallett Peak (about 9 mi). Longs Peak (about 14 mi) is a full mountaineering day for experienced hikers only.
When is the best time to visit Rocky Mountain National Park?
Late June for wildflowers, September and early October for elk, clear air and thinner crowds, and October for aspen colour. July and August are the busiest and stormiest; Trail Ridge Road usually closes from late October or November until late May.
Do I need a reservation to enter?
