A medieval silver-mining town inside a volcanic crater, on the UNESCO list since 1993. The old town is small and walkable in half a day, but the mines, the Calvary and the artificial lakes sit outside it, so two nights is the honest minimum. Buses from Bratislava take about 3 h 30 min and run a few times a day; there is no direct train.

The old town is compact and walkable; the train station is 3 km downhill (30–40 min on foot) and the bus station sits halfway up. Local buses and taxis cover the museums and lakes; taxis are booked by phone through your accommodation or the tourist office, not hailed on the street.

Watch out

Safety

A small, quiet town and one of the safer places in Slovakia. The real risks are the unlit, uneven lanes after dark, the steep walk back up from the train station, and cold, wet weather on the Calvary hill even in summer.
  • The train station is 3 km below the centre: arrange a taxi or check the local bus, do not plan to walk up with luggage.
  • The Glanzenberg adit is guided-tours-only and needs a reservation ahead.
  • Some sights and the Calvary key point run limited hours outside summer: check before you go.
  • Winding, narrow roads on the last 20 km from the R1 highway: allow extra time if driving.
