Tioman is a 20 km forested island off the Pahang coast, reached by ferry from Mersing or Tanjung Gemok. There are almost no roads between villages, so you pick one base and hop by boat. Dive and snorkel season runs roughly March to October; the northeast monsoon cuts ferry services from late October to mid February. Three to four nights covers a dive course, a jungle crossing and beach time without rushing.

Getting around

Boats do the work: the Mersing–Tioman ferry calls at Salang, Air Batang, Tekek, Paya and Genting, and speedboats cover the gaps. On land there is a concrete road and path around Tekek and Air Batang, 4WD taxis over the hill to Juara, and jungle tracks along the power line between villages. No car rental worth the name.

Cheapest beds, no cars, reef off both sides of the jetty; walkable 800 m path. Best for budget divers and snorkellers.

Salang

Northern village with the densest dive-shop cluster and reef close to shore; pricier beds than ABC.

Tekek

Main village, jetty, airport and the concrete road; practical for arrivals and errands, less beachy.

Juara

East coast, two beaches split by a small hill, very quiet in low season; reached by 4WD track or boat.

Paya and Genting

Smaller west-coast villages on the ferry route; Genting is the southernmost stop.

Watch out

Safety

Tioman is calm and low-crime; the real risks are boat and ferry conditions, jellyfish stings, sun and the jungle heat. Keep valuables with you, agree boat fares before boarding, and check the sea state before any crossing.
  • Ferry timetables shift with tides and passenger numbers; leave 1–2 h of buffer or plan a night in Mersing.
  • Monsoon (late Oct–mid Feb) can cancel ferries for days.
  • Marine park fee applies to foreign visitors on arrival — RM30 as of 2026.
  • Portuguese man o' war and jellyfish in shallow water, especially May–Sep; wear a rash guard or wetsuit.
  • Rubbish is a real problem on parts of the island; ask your resort how it disposes of waste.
  • Do not feed the monkeys or monitor lizards; keep food and bags closed.
