Turkmenabat is Turkmenistan's second-largest city, in the east near the Uzbek border on the Amu Darya. It is mainly a transit stop, with a large bazaar, a river bridge and Soviet-era buildings. Independent travel in Turkmenistan is restricted; a visa, and normally a licensed guide, are required for tourists, and transit visas have fixed itineraries. It fits a trip only as part of a guided route along the Uzbekistan border, and most visitors will not need to stay.
