Destination OS · Victoria Falls spray, a quiet river town, sunset on the Zambezi

Livingstone

Livingstone is a two-day base for the falls: see the falls early on the first morning while the light is low, keep midday for shade, take the Zambezi at sunset — and check the season, because the falls are at their fullest in March to May and lowest in October to December.

  • Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
  • Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
  • Southern Africa ↗A rental car may leave its home country only with the rental company's cross-border letter, the registration papers and paid road taxes at each post; driving into Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique or Angola without them ends at the border.
  • Southern Africa ↗Across the subregion, plan every road leg to arrive before sunset: livestock, wildlife, pedestrians and unlit trucks make night driving the main cause of serious visitor accidents.
  • Zambia ↗Check visa and entry rules for your passport on official Zambian government sources; if you will cross to Zimbabwe, ask about the KAZA UniVisa and whether it is available to you.
  • Zambia ↗Do not photograph government buildings, police, the military, airports or bridges.
  • Zambia ↗Many bush camps open only in the dry season; check opening dates before you fix flights.
  • Livingstone and Victoria Falls ↗Check visa rules before crossing the bridge or the river: they depend on your passport.

Decide

Who it suits, the trade-offs and when to go

Overview

The city in one paragraph, who it fits, and how many days it takes.

Livingstone is a small, flat town about 10 km from Victoria Falls. The falls, the bridge, the river lodges and the town are all a short taxi apart, but not a walk. The trips that go wrong go in the low-water months expecting a wall of water, walk the park in the noon heat, or forget that the Zambezi side and the Zimbabwe side are different border crossings with different visa rules. Four clusters cover a first visit; the bush camps are separate flights.

Fits

  • Short falls stays before a safari
  • River sunsets
  • Adventure activities booked through operators

Does not fit

  • Strollers and wheelchairs (broken pavements, wet paths)
  • Midday walkers in the hot months
  • Anyone who wants the falls at full flow in October
2 days
Falls and bridge in the morning, town and river at sunset
3 days
Four clusters, mornings and evenings only
5 days
Four clusters + a Zimbabwe-side or Chobe day + one slow day
Don't confuse
Victoria Falls is both the waterfall shared by Zambia and Zimbabwe and a town in Zimbabwe; Livingstone is the Zambian town.

Where’s what, as a list:

  • Town centre and Mosi-oa-Tunya Road: Errand-and-café cluster: banks, shops and cafés on the main road; do this in the morning and take a taxi for everything after dark.
  • Livingstone Museum quarter: Half-day cluster: the museum and the leafy streets around it; go at opening for the cool hours.
  • Falls, bridge and Mosi-oa-Tunya park: Morning cluster: the falls viewing paths and the bridge; go at opening in low light and carry a rain layer in the wet months.
  • Zambezi riverfront and lodge road: Sunset cluster: the river lodge road and the sundowner decks; go from 16:30 and take a taxi home.
  • Maramba market quarter: Morning local cluster: the market and its streets for fruit, cloth and everyday goods; go with small notes and keep valuables in front.
  • Sleep area River lodge road: suits Families, older travellers, price band $$.
  • Sleep area Town centre: suits Families, older travellers, price band $$.

Decide

The honest trade-off: what you will enjoy, what will wear you down.

You will like

  • Spray and river views
  • Compact town
  • Safari connections

You will hate

  • Spray that soaks everything in March to May
  • Low water in Oct–Dec
  • Midday heat

Arrive & move

Getting in, getting around, and your bags

Arrive

Gateways

Each gateway has its own airport-to-bed page with timings and the last safe connection.

Move

The default way around, when a pass pays off, and when the last trains go.

Default
Walk inside a cluster by day; a taxi or lodge car between clusters and after dark.
Passes
No pass. Agree the taxi fare before you get in, or use the hotel's car.
Last trains
No rail for visitors. Taxis are few after dark: ask the hotel to book the ride back.

Luggage

Where big bags are a problem, and how to get rid of them for the day.

Rule

Broken pavements and heat: large bags go from the car to the door, never on a walk.
Lockers
No public lockers; hotels hold bags after check-out.
Forwarding
No forwarding culture: keep the big bag at the Livingstone hotel while you go out for the night.
Dead zone
Late flights: ask the hotel to hold bags and for a room to shower.

Survive

Safety basics, the lines not to cross, and practical habits that save the day.

Safety

  • Spray and wet rock at the falls: wear shoes with grip and keep behind the rails.
  • Petty theft: keep phones and cash out of sight; use a taxi after dark.
  • Malaria is present: ask a travel clinic about prevention and use repellent at dusk.
  • Hippos and crocodiles live in the river: do not swim except on operator-run activities.
  • Emergency: 999 (police); ask your hotel to confirm the ambulance and fire numbers on arrival.

Red lines

  • Do not photograph the border post, police, soldiers or government buildings.
  • Devil's Pool and edge swims run only in low water with a licensed operator: follow the guide, the drop is fatal.

Practical

  • Toilets: hotels, cafés and the park entrance; carry tissues.
  • Tap water is not for drinking.
