Livingstone

Livingstone is a two-day base for the falls: see the falls early on the first morning while the light is low, keep midday for shade, take the Zambezi at sunset — and check the season, because the falls are at their fullest in March to May and lowest in October to December.

Livingstone is a small, flat town about 10 km from Victoria Falls. The falls, the bridge, the river lodges and the town are all a short taxi apart, but not a walk. The trips that go wrong go in the low-water months expecting a wall of water, walk the park in the noon heat, or forget that the Zambezi side and the Zimbabwe side are different border crossings with different visa rules. Four clusters cover a first visit; the bush camps are separate flights.

LVI to Livingstone: one pre-booked lodge transfer or airport taxi, 15–30 minutes — the risk is a flight that lands with no ride arranged, not the distance.

Get around

Walk inside a cluster by day; a taxi or lodge car between clusters and after dark.

Passes
No pass. Agree the taxi fare before you get in, or use the hotel's car.
Late at night
No rail for visitors. Taxis are few after dark: ask the hotel to book the ride back.

Language

English is official and widely spoken. Nyanja is the language of Lusaka and the east, Bemba of the north and Copperbelt, Tonga of the south (including Livingstone), and Lozi of the west.

  • Dress: Cover knees in villages; avoid: Swimwear away from the lodge
  • Photos: Ask first; avoid: Photographing officials or bridges

Red lines

  • Do not photograph the border post, police, soldiers or government buildings.
  • Devil's Pool and edge swims run only in low water with a licensed operator: follow the guide, the drop is fatal.

Scams (Zambia page)

  • Fake 'Devil's Pool' tours: Only one licensed operator runs Livingstone Island; book directly or via your lodge.
  • Currency changers at borders: Use banks or ATMs.
  • Unofficial 'guides' at the falls: The paths are signposted; guides are optional.
  • Police 'fines' on the road: Ask for an official receipt; stay polite.
