Belper is a small Derbyshire mill town 7 miles north of Derby, on the Derwent Valley line and the A6. Its North Mill is part of the Derwent Valley Mills UNESCO site, and the town has over 30 pubs within a short walk. It is a half-day to one-day stop, best paired with Derby, Matlock or the Peak District.

Getting around

The centre is walkable in 15–20 min end to end, but Long Row and the climb to St John's Chapel are steep and cobbled. Derwent Street and Coppice car parks are free; Bridge Street, Field Lane and River Gardens are pay and display. Trains run roughly hourly on the Derwent Valley line to Derby and Matlock.

A low-crime small town; the real risks are steep cobbled lanes, dark riverside paths after pub closing and unlit car parks. Standard UK precautions are enough.
