Legazpi is the capital of Albay and the practical base for Mayon Volcano, 15 km from Bicol International Airport (DRP) in Daraga. The city splits into two useful halves: the Old Albay district with the cathedral and city museum, and the Port District with the boulevard, malls and ferry terminal. Most travellers come for two nights, use tricycles and jeepneys to move, and pair the city with Daraga, Camalig or Tabaco.

Getting around

Jeepneys are frequent and cheap but you must ask the driver if they serve your stop — the windshield sign shows the final destination only. Tricycles handle short hops and can be shared; agree the fare first. Grab works across the city and is the easiest way to reach Ligñon Hill or the airport road. Fares are cash; keep small notes.

Watch out

Safety

Legazpi is a calm provincial capital; the real risks are typhoons, Mayon alerts, unlit roads after dark and tricycle fares quoted on the spot. Agree the price before you ride and keep cash small.
  • Typhoon season runs roughly Jun–Nov; check PAGASA forecasts before booking flights in Oct–Dec.
  • Mayon is an active volcano: check PHIVOLCS alerts and any permanent danger zone restrictions before hiking or going near the slopes.
  • Tricycle drivers at the airport quote ₱300–350 (≈ US$6–7) for two people; the walk-out gate rate is nearer ₱50 (≈ under US$1) per person — agree before you sit.
  • Some Legazpi Boulevard bars and karaoke places do not post prices; ask the total first.
  • Padang Memorial Cross sits on the highway shoulder with no parking and no shade — stop briefly, not for a picnic.
