BaybayBaybay City

Half a day to one night: walk the Visayas State University campus, see the Veterans Park and eat local seafood. Not a base for Leyte — use Tacloban or Ormoc instead.

Baybay is a quiet university town on Leyte's west coast, known for the sprawling campus of Visayas State University (VSU) and as a ferry link to Cebu. It has a small downtown, a few budget hotels and a relaxed pace. Most travellers pass through on the way between Ormoc and Maasin or catch the ferry to Cebu City.

Watch out

Safety

Baybay is a safe, quiet town. Usual precautions: keep valuables out of sight, avoid walking alone late at night on unlit streets, and agree tricycle fares upfront.
  • Typhoons can disrupt ferry and road travel from June to November.
  • ATMs: only Metrobank and PNB on Magsaysay Ave have 24-hour machines; bring enough cash.
  • Ferry schedules change: check at the terminal or with Roble Shipping.
  • Tricycle fares: agree before you ride.
