St. Jacobs is a village of about 2,000 people in Woolwich Township, north of Waterloo, in the middle of Ontario's Mennonite country. Two separate stops draw visitors: the historic village on King Street North, with its mill shops and small museums, and the farmers' market district 3 km south, just outside Waterloo. Most people come for a half-day from Waterloo or Kitchener, or as a stop on a southern Ontario road trip. Horse-drawn buggies share the roads, especially on Sundays and market days, and most shops close on Sunday.

Getting around

A car is the practical way to cover both the village and the market district. Grand River Transit route 21 runs from ION Conestoga station in Waterloo through St. Jacobs to Elmira six days a week; there is no Sunday service. The village itself is walkable, but the 3 km between the village and the market is along a busy road with no good footpath — drive or take the bus. The Waterloo Central Railway runs seasonal tourist trains between Waterloo, the market, St. Jacobs and Elmira.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe. The real risks are rural roads shared with horse-drawn buggies, winter ice, and Sunday closures that strand you without food or fuel — fill up and eat before 17:00.
  • No Sunday sales: most village shops and the market are closed on Sunday, and Mennonite families are church-going that day.
  • Buggies share the same roads as cars; pass slowly and leave plenty of room.
  • The St. Jacobs & Aberfoyle Model Railway closed at its King Street location and was looking for a new home — check before you plan around it.
  • Farmers' market days are Tuesday (summer), Thursday and Saturday; other days the halls are quiet.
  • Winter driving on Highway 85 and the back roads can be icy; check conditions before a day trip from Toronto.
