Schladming is a former mining town of about 6,800 people in the Enns valley that turns into one of Austria's biggest ski resorts each winter. The old town is walkable in 15 minutes and the Planai cable car leaves from its edge, so you can sleep in the centre and ski or hike without a car. Summer brings hikers to the Dachstein and the Reiteralm instead.

Getting around

The old town is small and walkable. Planai and Hochwurzen cable cars start at the town edge; a ski bus network links the valley villages in winter. Trains on the Ennstalbahn stop at Schladming station, a few minutes' walk from the centre.

Safety

Very safe for a resort town; the real risks are winter driving, unmarked off-piste terrain and altitude weather above 2,000 (≈ US$2,500) m. 112 works everywhere; 140 is mountain rescue.
  • Winter road conditions: carry chains and check passes before driving from Salzburg or Munich.
  • Book ski-season beds and ski hire early; Christmas, New Year and the World Cup week sell out.
  • Many lifts and hotels close in November and in the late-April to May gap: check dates before booking.
  • Mountain weather changes fast above 2,000 (≈ US$2,500) m; tell someone your route and carry a layer.
