Give Amherst one night as a stop on the Halifax–Moncton run, or half a day for the museum and marsh birds. Two nights only if you want the Fundy shore.
Amherst is a small Nova Scotia town on the Trans-Canada Highway, 20 minutes from the New Brunswick border and the head of the Bay of Fundy. It is a transport stop with a real county museum, a bird sanctuary on the marsh and a Victorian main street. Most travellers pass through; a night here breaks the Halifax–Moncton drive and puts the tidal shore within reach.

Getting around
Amherst is a driving town: the Trans-Canada (Highway 104) passes just south and Highway 6 (Sunrise Trail) comes in from the east. Three streets do most of the work — Albion, Church and Victoria. VIA Rail's Ocean stops at the Amherst station (27 Station Street) three times a week each way, but the building itself is closed, so treat it as a platform, not a waiting room. Maritime Bus serves a stop at 34 Highway 6.

Safety
- The VIA Rail station building is closed; there is no indoor waiting room, so time your arrival.
- The Ocean runs only about three times a week each way — check the current timetable before you build a plan on it.
- Amherst Point Bird Sanctuary and the Tidnish bridge are a short drive out of town with no bus service: you need a car.
- Winter brings ice and snow; the highway can close in storms.
- Some restaurants and seasonal businesses keep short hours or close out of season — call ahead.
