Plasencia is a walled Extremaduran town of about 41,000 people on the River Jerte, founded in 1186 and still ringed by medieval walls. The historic centre around Plaza Mayor is compact and walkable in a few hours; the reason to sleep here rather than pass through is the Jerte valley and the Cáceres–Salamanca rail and road corridor. Most travellers give it one night, two if they want a valley day.

Getting around

The walled centre is pedestrian and flat enough to cross in 15 minutes; everything in this guide is walkable. Three local bus lines cover the outer town, and line 2 links the train station to the centre. A car is only useful for the Jerte valley and day trips.

Safety

Plasencia is a calm, low-crime town; the real risks are summer heat, uneven cobbles in the old town, and pickpockets only in the busy Plaza Mayor bars.
  • Summer afternoons in July and August regularly pass 35 °C: walk early, rest 14:00–18:00.
  • Many old-town restaurants close 16:00–20:00 and on one weekday; check the door before planning dinner.
  • Cathedral and museum hours change with religious services: check the official site the day before.
  • Parking inside the walls is restricted; use edge-of-centre car parks.
