- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.
Provo sits in Utah Valley at the foot of the Wasatch Range, about 45–60 minutes by car from Salt Lake City. Most visitors come for the mountains, Provo Canyon and the Brigham Young University campus museums, then use the city as a base for Utah Valley and the national parks further south. Without a car the valley is slow: buses run on 30–60 minute schedules.

Arrive & move
Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in
Getting around
A car is the practical choice: sights are spread across the valley and buses run every 30–60 minutes. UTA buses and the FrontRunner commuter rail link Provo with Salt Lake City and Ogden; the FrontRunner station is at 701 South Freedom Boulevard. Parking is easy except on the BYU campus, where permit lots often open to the public in the evening.

Walkable restaurants and the City Center Temple; best for a short stay without a car.
University Avenue / BYU area
Closest to campus museums and performances; quiet in summer when students leave.
Orem and University Parkway
Chain hotels and free parking, 10–15 min south by car; good value if you drive.

Watch out
Safety
- Many businesses, including some gas stations, close on Sunday.
- I-15 is under long-term reconstruction: expect delays and consider State Street as a surface alternative from the north.
- Provo and Orem city limits are poorly marked; check which city an address is in before driving.
- The 801 area code overlaps with 385: dial the area code with every local call.
- Summer afternoons are hot and dry; carry water on canyon trails.
