Montes Claros
Half a day to one night: enough for the parks, caves and local food; use it as a stop between Belo Horizonte and the north of Minas Gerais.
Montes Claros is the main hub of Northern Minas Gerais, with a regional airport, a handful of green parks, archaeological sites and a lively market. Most travellers pass through on the way to Diamantina or Januária, but the city itself rewards a short stop for pequi dishes and a walk through Parque Municipal Milton Prates.
