Mykonos is the Cyclades' most expensive island and its most crowded in high season: a whitewashed port town (Chora), a ring of beach clubs, and Delos next door. Three nights covers the town, one or two beaches and the archaeological site; two nights is enough if you only want Chora and a beach. Costs run well above Naxos or Syros, and July–August brings meltemi wind, full ferries and peak prices.

Getting around

Two bus stations in Chora: Fabrika (south: Platys Gialos, Ornos, Paradise, Paraga) and the northern station near the old port (Ano Mera, Elia, Kalafatis). Buses are frequent in high season and stop in winter. About 30 taxis serve the whole island, so queues at Manto Square can run long; there is no meter, fares are posted. Small boats run from Platys Gialos and Ornos to the south beaches. Cars are banned inside Chora; rent a car or scooter only if you want the north coast.

Watch out

Safety

Mykonos is a safe island; the real risks are heat and alcohol, scooter crashes on windy roads, rip currents at the north beaches, and bar bills with no posted prices. Ask the total before you order.
  • July–August: ferries, beaches and Chora lanes are packed and prices peak; book beds and ferries months ahead.
  • Meltemi wind in Jul–Aug can cancel small-boat beach services and, rarely, ferries.
  • Around 15 August, ferries via Tinos fill with pilgrims; buy tickets well in advance.
  • Only about 30 taxis on the island: expect long waits in the evening.
  • Beach clubs and bars: ask the total before you sit, and check whether a minimum spend applies.
  • Most restaurants and shops close from November to April; winter transport is thin.
