Hayward is a mid-sized East Bay city of about 144,000 people between Oakland and Fremont, with two BART stops on the Daly City line and an Amtrak stop on the Capitol Corridor. The shoreline is warehouses and marsh, downtown is small and partly run down, and the good views are up in the hills near Cal State East Bay. Its real value is a cheaper bed with a 25–35 minute train ride to Oakland or San Francisco.

Getting around

A car is the practical way to reach the parks, the shoreline and most restaurants. BART covers Oakland, Berkeley, San Francisco and the airports; AC Transit buses fill gaps but do not reach every part of the city. Downtown parking is easy and usually free.

Watch out

Safety

Daytime downtown and around BART is fine. The real risks are empty industrial and shoreline areas after dark, cheap motels with poor security, and summer heat in the flatlands.
  • Do not walk the shoreline or industrial edges after dark; they are empty and poorly lit.
  • Some Mission Blvd motels are cheap for a reason: read recent reviews before booking.
  • Summer afternoons inland run hot; the hills are cooler than the flatlands.
  • BART stops running around midnight; check the last train before a late dinner in Oakland or San Francisco.
