Ainsworth has the cave hot springs and Cody Caves; Balfour has the ferry terminal, a golf course and the only grocery store. Most people come for one night, soak, and cross the lake the next morning. A car makes the pair work; without one you are tied to a Monday-to-Saturday bus.

- The ferry is free but sailings are roughly every 50 min in summer and every 100 min in winter: check the current schedule before you drive on.
- Cody Caves is a provincial park; access is by guided tour only and tours run seasonally — check availability and book ahead.
- Winter driving on Highway 3A and 31 can mean snow and ice; check road conditions before you set out, and the Kootenay Pass route via Salmo is a longer alternative when the ferry is delayed.
