Cornwall is Ontario's easternmost city, on the St. Lawrence Seaway an hour west of Montréal and two hours east of Kingston. It is a small city of about 46,000 with a compact downtown, a prison museum, a 75-km waterfront path and a hydro dam visitor centre. Most travellers see it from the train window; the rest stop for a night between Toronto and Montréal or use it as a base for the Long Sault Parkway and Upper Canada Village.

Getting around

Cornwall Transit (TheBus) runs about six local routes; useful only if you are staying on a route. Most visitors drive: Highway 401 exit 789, and the city is spread out. Taxis are the fallback after the last bus. VIA Rail stops at the unstaffed Cornwall station, 1650 Station Rd, on the Toronto–Montréal line.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet small city; the usual Canadian risks apply. Downtown Pitt Street is fine by day and early evening, quieter late. Winter ice on the waterfront path and highway snow squalls are the real hazards.
  • Cornwall station is unstaffed and has no ticket counter: buy online or by phone before you travel.
  • Wheelchair lift access at the station needs 48 hours' notice.
  • Winter driving on Highway 401 can close lanes in snow squalls; check conditions before a long leg.
  • The Seaway shipping season typically ends in December and reopens near the end of March, so winter boat watching is limited.
