Banagher is a small Shannon town of about 1,900 people at the western edge of County Offaly, where the river shallows were bypassed by a lock system and the Grand Canal once met the navigation. The waterways are the reason to come: hire a cruiser, walk the canal bank at Shannon Harbour, and use the town as a bed base for Clonmacnoise, which has almost no accommodation of its own. There is no railway station and no local taxi, so a car or a booked transfer decides your trip.

Getting around

You need wheels. There is no local taxi in Banagher, and one would have to come from Birr. The town itself is walkable in 10 minutes; everything else — Shannon Harbour, Shannonbridge, Clonmacnoise, Ferbane — is a drive on R-roads. Buses (Local Link 840 and 850, Bus Éireann 72 via Birr) reach the villages but not the sites.

A quiet town, but transport is thin: no taxi based here and no railway station, so book transfers ahead. Rural R-roads are narrow and unlit, canal and river banks are dark after dusk, and mobile coverage has dead patches — carry offline maps.
