Kaikoura is a small coastal town on State Highway 1 between Christchurch and Picton, with a deep offshore trench that pulls whales, dolphins and seals close to shore. It is a one-night stop on most South Island drives; two nights if you add a marine trip and the peninsula walkway. Book marine trips ahead and keep a spare day for weather.

Getting around
The town is flat and walkable: Beach Rd and West End hold most cafés, shops and tour offices. The peninsula and Point Kean are 3–4 km from the centre, so drive, cycle or take a shuttle. Kaikoura Shuttles runs locally and further afield daily, roughly 7AM–11PM. There is no public bus network.

Safety
- Marine trips are weather-dependent and cancel at short notice: book the first morning of your stay, not the last.
- Keep 10 m from fur seals at Point Kean and never block them from the sea; they bite.
- SH1 north and south has roadworks and one-lane sections after the 2016 earthquake: allow extra time.
- There is one supermarket in town (New World, Beach Rd); fill up and stock up before evening.
- Cell coverage is patchy on the coast road north and south of town.
