Quick answer

The UK Youth Mobility Scheme is a 2-year visa for young adults from a list of countries and territories that have a reciprocal arrangement with the UK. You do not need a job offer, a sponsor or a university place. You pay the fee, prove you meet the age and passport rules, and you can then live in the UK and take most kinds of work.

The main catches: the visa cannot be extended, you cannot bring a partner or children on it, and some nationalities must first win a place in an annual ballot. Australians, Canadians and New Zealanders are among the nationalities that apply directly rather than through the ballot (check the current list before you start).

If you are comparing routes, the UK scheme is one of several working holiday visas. Australia, New Zealand and Canada each run their own versions with different age limits, lengths and conditions.

Do

  • Check your passport's current status on the official gov.uk list before you plan anything else.
  • The visa starts on the date you enter the UK, not the date it is granted.

Who it applies to

Eligibility turns on three things: your nationality, your age on the date you apply, and your savings. The scheme is built on reciprocal agreements, so the list of participating countries and territories changes when governments renegotiate. Always read the current gov.uk list rather than a blog post.

Age limits are usually 18 to 30, but some nationalities have a higher ceiling of 35. The lower bound is firm: you cannot apply before your 18th birthday. There is no upper age test after you are granted the visa, so a 30-year-old who is granted at 30 can still use the full two years.

You also need to show you can support yourself at the start. The exact maintenance figure is set by the Home Office and can change; treat any number you read online as a check item and confirm it on gov.uk before you pay.

How to apply, step by step

Apply online from outside the UK. You can normally apply up to six months before the date you intend to travel, and you must be outside the UK when you apply and when the decision is made. The application is handled by UK Visas and Immigration; there is no interview in most cases.

You will need a current passport, proof of your savings if asked, and a tuberculosis test certificate if you are applying from a country where the UK requires one. You will also pay the immigration health surcharge, which gives you access to NHS care on the same basis as a UK resident for the length of the visa.

Once granted, you get a visa vignette or an online immigration status. You must enter the UK within the validity window on the visa. The two years run from your date of entry, so do not activate it earlier than you need to.

If your nationality uses the ballot, the order is different: you enter the ballot first, and only if you are selected can you apply for the visa. Missing the ballot window means waiting for the next one.

How to apply, step by step

Timings and requirements are set by UK Visas and Immigration; confirm on gov.uk.

Watch out

  • Applying from inside the UK is not allowed on this route.
  • Do not book flights before the visa is granted.

Cost and time

Two costs dominate: the visa application fee and the immigration health surcharge. The fee is in the region of £298 and the health surcharge is charged per year of the visa, so the total is well over £1,000 (roughly USD 1,300–1,800 depending on the rate). Both are 2026 estimates and both change; check the current figures on gov.uk before you budget.

On top of that, budget for biometrics if your application centre charges a service fee, a tuberculosis test if required, and your flight. Inside the UK, the big ongoing costs are rent, transport and the council tax or bills that come with a room in a shared house.

Processing is usually a few weeks, but it stretches in busy periods. Apply as early as the six-month window allows if you have a fixed start date.

Exceptions and limits

The visa is generous on work but strict on a few things. You can be employed, self-employed, work for multiple employers, change jobs and study. You cannot work as a professional sportsperson or sports coach, and you cannot work as a doctor or dentist in training. Those restrictions are about protecting domestic training routes, not about your qualifications.

You cannot extend the visa, and you cannot switch into another visa route from inside the UK on the basis of this one. If you want to stay longer, you generally need to leave and apply from outside under a different route, such as a skilled worker visa with a sponsoring employer.

Dependants are not allowed. A partner or child cannot come with you on your visa; they would need their own route.

Some nationalities face an annual cap through the ballot. If you are not selected, you cannot apply that year, even if you meet every other requirement.

Watch out

  • No extension and no switching from inside the UK on this route.
  • No dependants.
  • Professional sport and doctor or dentist in training work are excluded.

How it compares with Australia, New Zealand and Canada

All four countries run working holiday style visas for young adults, but the details differ enough to change your plan. The UK route is a flat two years with no regional work requirement. Australia's 417 and 462 visas can be extended by specified work, and the tax treatment for working holiday makers is its own subject. New Zealand's scheme is also extendable in some cases. Canada's International Experience Canada is a pool-based system with categories, including a working holiday category, and draws rather than a straight application.

The practical question is where you want to be and what you want to do. If you want a base in London or Manchester with easy travel around Europe, the UK scheme is the simplest. If you want farm work and a possible third year, Australia's rules are the ones to read.

After you land

You need a National Insurance number to work and pay tax. Apply once you are in the UK; it takes a few weeks, and you can start work while you wait if your employer is willing. You also need a UK bank account for wages, which usually requires proof of address.

Register with a GP surgery as soon as you have an address. The health surcharge gives you access to NHS care, but registration is not automatic and popular surgeries close their lists.

Rent is the biggest cost. London and the South East are the most expensive; northern cities and Wales are cheaper. Most newcomers start in a shared house, often through a spare-room site, and pay a deposit plus the first month up front.

Do

  • Apply for your National Insurance number in your first week.
  • Open a bank account before your first payday if you can.
  • Keep your visa and passport details saved offline.
