Wrocław is Poland's western hub, the historic capital of Silesia, and a compact old town built over islands on the Oder. Most of the centre is walkable, the tram network is cheap and frequent, and two nights covers the Rynek, Cathedral Island, the dwarves and the Centennial Hall district. It works as a 2-night stop between Kraków and Berlin or Dresden, or as a base for Lower Silesian castles and mountain towns.

Getting around

Trams (lines 0–79) and buses cover the city; single ride 4.60 zł, 24-hour ticket 15 zł, 72-hour 32 zł (check). Validate on boarding or risk a 150 zł fine. Google Maps transit is unreliable here — use the Jakdojade app. The centre is walkable; taxis are cheap. City bikes run April–November.

Watch out

Safety

Wrocław is a safe big city by day and on the main streets at night. The real risks are pickpockets on the Rynek and packed trams, unmarked bar tabs, and winter ice on the Oder bridges.
  • Validate every ticket on boarding; inspectors fine 150 zł (100 zł if paid within 7 days).
  • Ticket machines on trams and buses take card only, and print nothing — the ticket is coded on your card.
  • Some Rynek and Świdnicka bars post no prices; ask the total before ordering.
  • Pickpockets work the Rynek, the station and packed trams; keep bags zipped in front.
  • St. Elizabeth's tower is closed November–March and has no lift.
