London, OntarioLondon

Give London 1–2 nights as a stop between Toronto and Windsor/Sarnia, or 2–3 if you want the museums and Wortley Village at an easy pace.

London is a mid-sized southwestern Ontario city of about 366,000, roughly halfway between Toronto and Windsor on the 401. It is a university and hospital town with a compact downtown, a walkable river valley and a strong small-museum set. Most travellers pass through on the Toronto–Windsor rail or road corridor; it works as a one- or two-night stop rather than a destination in itself.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Getting around

London's grid streets make driving straightforward, but traffic can delay trips downtown and around the university. London Transit buses charge C$3.50 cash for 90 minutes (2026); service ranges from about every 5 minutes downtown to 15–60 minutes elsewhere and major routes do not run past midnight. Walking and cycling paths follow the Thames River.

Safety

Use normal city precautions and check road conditions before winter drives. Snow squalls can affect Highway 401; do not leave valuables visible in a parked car.
  • A city bylaw restricts overnight parking on public streets in fall and winter; check signs before leaving a car.
  • LTC buses do not run past midnight on major routes; plan a taxi or rideshare after that.
  • Prices in Ontario are shown before sales tax (13% HST), so the bill is higher than the menu.
