Orlik

Spend 2 days in Orlik to see the hot springs and nearby natural parks; travel from Ulan‑Ude takes about 10 h by bus.

Orlik is the tiny administrative centre of the Okinsky district in Buryatia, population under 1 000. It sits at the end of the A164 highway and serves as the most convenient base for exploring the surrounding mountains, glaciers, hot springs and Buddhist sites. Because services are limited, a short stay (1‑2 days) is enough to visit the main attractions and return to a larger hub.

  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Reach this subregion only from the EU side — Romania for Moldova — through crossings run by recognised authorities; no route through Ukraine, Belarus or Russia is planned here.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Re-read your government's advice for Moldova (it covers Transnistria) in the week you travel; the situation next door changes fast.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Carry euros in cash for Transnistria and village Moldova; cards stop working at the Dniester.
  • Russia ↗Check your own government travel advice for Russia before any booking; advice depends on your passport and changes without notice.
  • Russia ↗Direct flights from much of Europe and North America are suspended; no independent tourist route is documented here.
  • Russia ↗Confirm that your travel insurance and medical evacuation cover apply to Russia before you rely on it.

Watch out

Safety

Orlik is generally safe for tourists; the main risks are weather‑related (cold snaps, sudden storms) and the remoteness of services.
  • Remote location – limited medical facilities; carry a basic first‑aid kit.
  • Roads can be rough; vehicle hire may require a driver familiar with mountain terrain.
  • Buses run only on specific days (Ulan‑Ude daily at 08:00, Slyudyanka on Wednesdays and Saturdays).
