Major city · Syria
Manbij
Skip unless you are already in northern Syria for a specific reason: the ancient city has almost no standing sights, and the castle Qal'at Najm is the only intact landmark. Half a day covers it.
Manbij is an ancient city that was a key station on the Seleucid road between Antioch and the Tigris, and later a Roman city. Almost all historical structures were destroyed during the civil war. The one exception is Qal'at Najm, a 12th-century castle on the Euphrates. The city is now under the Syrian transitional government (since December 2024). Most travellers pass through on the way to the Euphrates valley or Kobani.
