Gourock
Treat Gourock as a ferry pier, not a base: 2–3 hours on foot, or one night if you sail to Dunoon. Sleep in Greenock if you need a bed.
Gourock is a Clyde coast town of about 10,200 people at the end of the Glasgow commuter line, and its real job is the ferry: foot passengers to Dunoon in 25 min, or the Western Ferries car crossing from McInroy's Point. The town itself is a short main street, a heated outdoor saltwater pool and a breezy hill park. Most travellers pass through in an afternoon; one night makes sense only if you are catching an early or late sailing.

Getting around
The town is walkable: railway station to ferry terminal is about 200 yards, and the Esplanade path runs a couple of miles to Greenock. Trains from Glasgow Central run every 15 min (40–50 min). McGill's bus 901 links Glasgow, Greenock, Gourock, Wemyss Bay and Largs; the 906 skips Gourock.

Safety
- Trains and ferries are not held for each other; if you are late for the last connection, tell the conductor or ferry steward and it may be held.
- Foot ferries take no cars and need no booking; the car crossing leaves from McInroy's Point, not the town pier.
- Gourock has very little accommodation: book Greenock if the Spinnaker is full.
- Fuel is cheaper in Greenock before you cross to Cowal.
