San Juan is a low-rise wine city in a dry Andean valley, rebuilt on wide tree-lined avenues after the 1944 earthquake. The centre is walkable in half a day; the reason most travellers stop is the province around it — Ischigualasto (Valle de la Luna), Barreal and the Ullum reservoir. Flights from Buenos Aires take about 2 hours; the long-distance bus from Mendoza is about 3 hours.
