RuthinRhuthun

One night is enough: see the gaol, the square and Nantclwyd y Dre, walk the river loop, then use Ruthin as a base for Moel Famau or Llangollen.

Ruthin is a small Denbighshire market town with one of Wales's best groups of timber-framed buildings, a Victorian gaol you can walk through and a river-and-castle loop of about a mile. The town itself fills a half day to a day; the reason to sleep here is the Clwydian Range, Moel Famau and the Horseshoe Pass on the doorstep. Come May to September for the walks, or in December for the Christmas market.

Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • United Kingdom ↗Most visitors who do not need a UK visa now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling; this includes EU nationals. Irish citizens are exempt. Check the UK government site for your passport.
  • United Kingdom ↗The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area; a Schengen visa is not valid for the UK.
  • United Kingdom ↗Driving is on the left; London has congestion and emissions charges for most vehicles, so do not drive in the city.

Getting around

The centre is walkable in 15 minutes end to end. Bus 73 loops the town (Tesco, Market Square, St Peter's Square, Tyn y Parc, Porth y Dre, Trem y Foel). For the Clwydian Range, Llangollen or Denbigh you need a car or a booked taxi: rural buses are thin, especially on Sundays.

Moel Famau and the Clwydian Range

go

Door to door: About 30 min by car, then 1–1.5 h on foot

Car to the Bwlch Pen Barras car park, then a walk of about 30–40 min to the Jubilee Tower

The best half-day from Ruthin. Go early: the car park fills on sunny weekends.

Llangollen

go

Door to door: About 30 min

Car over the Horseshoe Pass (A542)

The pass itself is the sight; stop at the viewpoint. Canals, steam railway and the abbey at Valle Crucis.

Denbigh

go

Door to door: About 25 min by car

Car or bus

Castle ruins and a walled town; pairs well with Ruthin in one day.

Llandegla mountain bike centre

go

Door to door: About 25 min

Car to Coed Llandegla Forest

Trail centre with bike hire; book bikes ahead at weekends.

Chester

caution

Door to door: About 45 min by car

Car, or bus to Wrexham or Chester then rail

Worth a full day, but the bus-and-rail combination makes it a long day without a car.

Snowdonia National Park

overnight

Door to door: About 1 h to the park edge

Car via the A494 and A5

Not a day trip from Ruthin if you want to walk: sleep in Betws-y-Coed or Llanberis.

Town centre (St Peter's Square and Well Street)

Walk to everything; pubs, cafés and the market square on the doorstep. Best for one night without a car.

Castle Street and the castle grounds

Quieter, with the castle hotel and the parkland loop starting here.

Ruthin outskirts and Llanelidan

Self-catering, glamping and rural stays; you need a car for these.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-crime market town; the real risks are wet, unlit lanes after dark, fast traffic on the A494 and A525, and hill weather that turns quickly on the Clwydians. Standard UK advice applies: 999 in an emergency, 111 for NHS non-urgent.
  • No railway station: you arrive by bus from Wrexham, Chester or Rhyl, or by car.
  • Rural buses run a handful of times a day and barely at all on Sundays: check the timetable before you rely on one.
  • The gaol and Nantclwyd y Dre keep limited seasonal hours: check before travelling.
  • Hills and lanes around Moel Famau are narrow and often wet: boots, not trainers.
