Owerri is the capital of Imo State and the self-styled entertainment capital of Nigeria, built on a dense spread of hotels, bars and kitchens rather than monuments. Getting around

Buses and shared taxis cover the city; okada (motorcycles) are banned inside Owerri city and only run on designated streets outside it. Most intercity buses use Egbu Road and Control Post motor parks. Fares are low but you should agree the price before you get in.

Safety

Owerri is generally calm in the centre by day, but Imo State carries a real security warning: check your government's advice, avoid night travel and unplanned stops, and keep cash and documents separate.
  • Check your government's travel advice for Imo State before booking; security incidents and kidnap risk are reported in parts of the South East.
  • Avoid all travel after dark outside the centre and skip unplanned stops at checkpoints.
  • Rain is heavy from June to September and roads flood; build slack into any road transfer.
  • Carry cash: card machines fail often and ATMs run out.
  • Ask the total before you sit down in a bar with no posted prices.
