Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
  • Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
  • Germany ↗Germany is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
  • Germany ↗Nazi symbols and gestures are criminal offences, including as jokes or souvenirs.
  • Germany ↗Many city centres are low-emission zones: a car needs the right sticker (Umweltplakette) to enter.

Pforzheim sits at the northern edge of the Black Forest, where the Enz, Nagold and Würm meet, about 30 minutes by train from Karlsruhe and Stuttgart. An air raid on 23 February 1945 destroyed roughly 80% of the centre, so the city is post-war and functional rather than half-timbered. Its identity is precious metal: a large share of German jewellery is still made here, and the Schmuckmuseum is the reason most visitors stop. It is also the traditional start of the Westweg, Mittelweg and Ostweg long-distance trails.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The centre is walkable: Hauptbahnhof to Marktplatz is about 15 minutes on foot. Buses and the S5/S6 tram-train run under the Pforzheim-Enzkreis network (VPE), which is part of the larger Karlsruhe KVV fare area, so KVV tickets work. Lime e-scooters are available via app. Taxis wait at the station.

Dillweißenstein

South-west of the centre, base for the youth hostel and the start of the Westweg; quiet, needs a bus or taxi.

Watch out

Safety

A safe mid-size German city; the real risks are trailhead logistics, wet forest paths and limited evening options outside the centre. Use 112 for fire and ambulance, 110 for police.
  • The centre is post-war and spread out; do not expect an old town.
  • Trailheads for the Westweg and Mittelweg are outside the centre: plan a bus or taxi to the start.
  • Some museums and the rail museum keep limited hours: check before you travel.
  • Sunday shopping is closed; buy what you need on Saturday.
