Go only if you are passing through the Caspian Basin or working the oil fields: one night, a river walk and the mosque, then move on.
Atyrau is an oil and gas city on the Ural River, about 25–30 km from the Caspian shore, and most visitors arrive on business or on the rail line between Russia and western Kazakhstan. The centre is compact and walkable, the Manjali Mosque and the river embankment are the main sights, and one full day covers it. It is not a resort: summer is hot and dusty, winter is icy, and the Caspian beaches are far away.
