Ingelheim am Rhein
Use Ingelheim as a half-day stop for the Kaiserpfalz and a winery, or one night if you are cycling the Rhine; skip it as a base for the region.
Ingelheim is a small Rhine-Hesse town between Mainz and Bingen, known for the ruins of Charlemagne's imperial palace (Kaiserpfalz) and for wine. It has no single compact centre: the town spreads across Nieder-Ingelheim, Ober-Ingelheim, Frei-Weinheim and newer quarters. Most travellers see it in half a day, or sleep one night while cycling or driving the Rhine. Mainz, Bingen and the Rheingau are close enough that a base elsewhere works.

Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
- Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
- Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
- Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
- Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
- Germany ↗Germany is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
- Germany ↗Nazi symbols and gestures are criminal offences, including as jokes or souvenirs.
- Germany ↗Many city centres are low-emission zones: a car needs the right sticker (Umweltplakette) to enter.
Entry rules depend on your passport. Full visa guide

Getting around
The town is spread out; walking between Nieder-Ingelheim, the Kaiserpfalz and Ober-Ingelheim takes 15–30 min each way, and Frei-Weinheim is further north. Regional trains stop at Ingelheim station on the Mainz–Bingen–Koblenz line, with buses from the station forecourt. A bicycle is the easiest way to cover the quarters and the Rhine path.

Watch out
Safety
- The quarters are far apart: do not assume you can walk everything in an hour.
- Many wineries open by appointment or on set afternoons only: check before you go.
- The Rhine ferry to Oestrich-Winkel runs seasonally and stops in the evening: check the last crossing.
- Regional trains are the practical link; late-evening buses are sparse.
