Hanko (Hangö in Swedish) is Finland's southernmost town, at the tip of a peninsula where the Gulf of Finland meets the Archipelago Sea. It grew as a Russian-era spa resort in the 1870s, and its wooden villas, casino and long sandy beaches still fill with summer visitors. The marina is Finland's busiest guest harbour, and the Hanko Regatta in early July is the season's peak. Outside June–August the town is quiet and much of the seasonal trade closes.

Getting around

On foot for the centre and marina — most sights are within 15–20 minutes of each other. Rent a bike to reach the beaches, Tulliniemi and the peninsula's far end. Taxis and parking are easy except during the regatta. Matkahuolto's route planner covers local buses.

Watch out

Safety

Hanko is a low-crime small town; the real risks are cold water and slippery coastal rocks, wind exposure at Tulliniemi, and regatta-weekend crowds and drink. Swim only where others do, and keep an eye on the weather.
  • Regatta weekend (early Jul): accommodation sells out — book months ahead.
  • Many restaurants, the casino and Hanko Sushi are summer-only; check opening before you travel.
  • The Hanko–Karis commuter train is sometimes replaced by a bus — verify the timetable.
  • Tulliniemi and the fortress ruins are exposed coastal terrain: wind, slippery rocks, no shelter.
  • No passenger ferries from Germany or Estonia as of recent years — arrive by road or rail.
